The BRICS Literary Award

The BRICS Literary Award is designed to enhance cultural exchange and open new horizons of mutual understanding for readers across BRICS countries. The decision to establish the Award was made in November 2024 at the BRICS “Traditional Values” Forum in Moscow. The Award aims to foster intercultural dialogue and serve as a tool for strengthening mutual respect and creative growth among member nations.

How much do we know about Nobel Laureates from Africa, like Wole Soyinka, or from Asia, like Mo Yan, whose works transformed the global literary canon? Are we familiar with the classic and still-relevant texts about racial segregation and the struggle for freedom by authors from South Africa? For many, the answer is no—and the BRICS Literary Award seeks to change this. The Award’s purpose is to select, translate, and publish outstanding works from BRICS countries that reflect the values and historical experience of their peoples.

The BRICS Literary Award is given not for a specific book, but to recognize the overall contribution of an author, especially their ability to convey the values of their nation. While cross-cultural interaction between BRICS countries is appreciated, it is not a primary criterion.

Authors eligible for the Award must be citizens of BRICS countries and have written works in the languages of BRICS nations. Each country has established a Board of Directors that appoints a respected jury consisting of publishers, literary scholars, and cultural figures who select three authors best representing their culture and people.

The longlist of nominees for the inaugural season of the BRICS Literary Award will be announced on September 17, 2025, as part of the Second BRICS “Traditional Values” Forum in Brasília, Brazil.

Winners of the Award will gain recognition across BRICS countries. The organizing committee will work to ensure their books are published and translated into multiple languages, making these outstanding works accessible to a wider international audience.

The main goals of the Award are:

- To expand cultural exchange and promote acquaintance with the literary traditions and values of BRICS countries;

- To support traditional spiritual, family, and national values through literature;

- To create a platform for interaction among writers, literary critics, editors, publishers, and literary communities for discussing book markets and trends;

- To recommend outstanding authors and works to publishers, literary agents, and cultural institutions, encouraging translation, publication, and popularization of BRICS literature worldwide.

All information about the BRICS Literary Award, including its regulations, is published on the official website: https://bricsaward.org/.

The BRICS Literary Award aspires to become a key driver for cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening ties among nations and inspiring new generations of readers and writers.
