Health of Nations: Preventive Medicine in the BRICS Agenda
Preventive Medicine in Focus
During the preparation of the medical session, the Forum Organizing Committee, in coordination with the expert medical community, decided to revise the topic of the round table and place stronger emphasis on preventive medicine. This approach was identified as a foundation for the health of BRICS nations and as an effective mechanism for reducing budgetary pressure on social and healthcare systems across BRICS countries.
The round table “Preventive Medicine and Nutrition as the Foundation of Health for BRICS Countries” brought together representatives from BRICS states.
India, a country that has contributed Ayurveda, phytopharmaceuticals and unique preventive medicine practices to the world, was represented by MP Dr. Hemang Yogesh Joshi.
Brazil was represented by President of the Parliamentary ESG Front MP Dr. Flavio Nogueira, South Africa by MP Ashley Sauls, Ethiopia by MP Zelalem Melak Bogale, and Russia by MP Dmitry Kuznetsov.
The round table was moderated by Maria Maryasova, Leader of the Committee of the Russian parliamentary party New People.
The round table addressed the following key topics:
Common Approaches — Common Future: standards of preventive medicine for the sustainable development of health systems in BRICS countries
Obesity: Trend or Scourge of the 21st Century? Global practices for managing obesity to reduce disease burden and healthcare pressure
National Health Strategy: preventive medicine and the “Slim Nation” social project
Experience of integrating principles of Eastern medicine into modern nutrition
The latest experience of reflexology practice as a dynamically developing area of preventive medicine
Using preventive medicine for mass prevention and improving quality of life in Russia
discussion demonstrated that preventive medicine is viewed by BRICS countries not only as a medical tool, but as a comprehensive social and economic resource that directly influences public well-being, demographic sustainability and long-term national development.
The round table also featured participation from leading Russian experts, including Tatiana Kartavenko, Natalia Ignatova, Irina Starkova, Nikolay Panasyuk, Alexander Ushatov and Irina Shimanskaya.
As a result of the discussions, participants signed a Declaration that includes the following provisions:
a decision to establish a permanent BRICS Council on Preventive Medicine, Health of Nations and Happiness;
expansion of cooperation among BRICS countries in the study of happiness and well-being factors, including interaction between relevant ministries, agencies and specialized research centers, with the aim of integrating emotional and mental well-being into national preventive healthcare strategies;
joint educational, informational and scientific activities, development of necessary standards and strengthening of direct cooperation between BRICS countries in this field;
initiation of work on creating a unified registry of recommended organizations, qualified experts, reliable dietary supplement manufacturers, as well as clinics and research centers, to promote healthy lifestyles and build a positive reputation for preventive medicine across BRICS countries.
